Groner Glass

cold cut dichroic and faceted glassworks, each item is one-of-a-kind

handmade in the Finger Lakes, New York

Every piece is handmade in my studio in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Each item is one of a kind, I never make the same cut twice.

I commonly make SPHERES - CUBES - POLYHEDRONS - PYRAMIDS

Dichroic glass is a modern composite non-translucent glass that is produced by stacking layers of metal oxides which give the glass shifting colors depending on the angle of view, causing an array of colors to be displayed as an example of thin-film optics. Through intentionally cutting, layering, and grinding these sheets of dichroic glass I am able to create multi-layered glass art pieces with bright flashes, and hidden dimensions.

how is each piece made?

The glass is cut in sections, cut and assembled cold using an epoxy that has the same refractive index as the glass/crystal.

I make each piece using lapidary machines and hxtal to layer glass, cut it in to slices, grind each piece to polish, and repeat many times over. then I hand faceted it into its final shape grinding and polishing each side.

To the right is a glass piece in progress. Many layers have been glued together, but the shaping and polishing has yet to begin.

Below are sections of dichroic glass in different colored highlights.

every angle a different universe

The refractive quality of dichroic glass makes each piece showcase its inner facets in a unique way from every angle. Producing unexpected colors, beauty and chaos contained by the smooth exterior planes of the glass.
